IBDP Chemistry Question Analysis Topic: Chemistry -

Exam Question:
1) The number of atoms present in one molecule of an elementary substance is called its:
(A) Atomicity
(B) Valency
(C) Molecular Weight
(D) Isotopic index

2) The chemical name of baking soda is sodium _______.

Answer:

For IBDP Chemistry, you should know:

1) The molecular weight of a molecule is equal to the total atomic masses of all the atoms in the molecule. Molecular weight can be calculated using a variety of units, including grams and atomic mass units. The amount of mass, however, won't change because it is independent of size.

The ability of an atom or molecule to combine with another atom or molecule is measured by its valency. It indicates how many electrons an atom can either receive or lose to participate in a chemical reaction.

The amount of neutrons over the initial isotope of an element are shown by the isotopic index.

The total number of atoms in a molecule is known as its atomicity. As there are two oxygen atoms present, the atomic number of an oxygen molecule, for instance, is 2.

From this information given, it can be deduced that the answer is option A - atomicity.

2) When the word "soda" appears in an inorganic compound, it refers to the substance's inclusion of sodium ions. As a result, we can infer from this that the baking soda mentioned in the query contains sodium.

Now that we are aware that sodium is a cation, we need an anion to complete the structure because it is an ionic compound. Soda and carbon dioxide gas are connected. It has to do with a substance that, when given the opportunity to react with specific reagents, can produce carbon dioxide.

CO32- and HCO3- are the anions that, when reacting, can release carbon dioxide gas. An anion named HCO3- is present in baking soda.

The HCO3- ion is known as the bicarbonate ion because hydrogen is present with the carbonate ion.

As such, we can deduce that the answer is sodium bicarbonate.
