  • IBMYP MIDDLE-YEAR PROGRAM

The IBMYP (IB Middle Years Programme) is a five-year curriculum framework for students from age 11-16. The emphasis of the programme is to prepare their students for the real world, and thus drilling more practical applications and a balanced education. They include several subjects, from Science to Language (Acquisition and Literature). Students who wish to pursue a future in these subjects are encouraged to make their choice for the stream they wish to continue their further studies in.

The final year of the programme will give the students a choice to opt for an examination or closely assessed coursework to students based on what they have learned, which is referred to as ‘external assessment’, after which, they will obtain an IBMYP certificate and their course results.

The IBMYP is a highly flexible programme, and the certificate is accepted by several universities as a confirmation of middle school education. However, the teaching methods and pace vary from school to school, and a student who transfers from one school that does IBMYP to another, may still find themselves lost with a vastly different teaching pace.

  • BE WELL FAMILIAR WITH EACH CRITERION

WHAT THEY EXPECT FROM YOUR ASSIGNMENT & INVESTIGATIONS

  • HOW WE EXCEL YOUR MYP CURRICULUM

FROM OUR 12+ YEARS OF IBMYP TEACHING & TUTORING EXPERIENCE

    MATHEMATICS

At Tuttee, we have a question bank full of various topics, from different examination boards, with a wide range of difficulty. The IBMYP Mathematics curriculum has always posed a challenge to students. We believe in starting out with easier questions, and once a student has learned and perfected the theories behind the mathematical concept, they are ready to move onto harder ones. Even with a formula sheet, it is unlikely that a student can successfully ace a mathematics assignment- so we at Tuttee will teach students how to be more confident in their mathematical skill.

    SCIENCE

IBMYP Sciences are regarded as a difficult stream, considering the research papers and texts that students will have to read for projects, and the various lab attempts and procedures that they will have to be familiar with. Tuttee, a primarily science-oriented center, is dedicated to teaching students the concepts that they have learned at school, and building a solid foundation to help them properly understand the subject as a whole, so they will be able to answer any question that comes up, and confidently present their topic. From Physics, Biology to Chemistry, we will teach students the fundamental concepts of each topic.

    CHINESE

Tuttee offers classes on Chinese Literature/Language Acquisition, and has a standardized reference for students to use as a guide when referring to texts. For students whose native language does not include Chinese, we have a vocabulary bank to familiarize with discussion-specific words, to use when writing a script for a presentation, or writing a literary piece. This will also be useful when it comes to analyzing unseen texts.

    ENGLISH

Tuttee also teaches English Literature/Language Acquisition. There will be heavy emphasis on language analysis and literary techniques. Students often struggle with analysis and organization, concerning both literature and language acquisition, but our tutors can help with tidying up an essay to make it more presentable to a reader. This will help score more marks from an assessor. Poorly-structured arguments will not win anyone over, and are usually the biggest obstacle of a good mark in coursework.

HOW TO ACHIEVE ALL THE CRITERIA

The student culture in Hong Kong revolves around periodic stress from school examinations, especially with how heavily they make up the grade for the semester, and are a strong indicator of whether one will pass or fail the academic year. However, IBMYP makes a distinction for itself, and seeks to take the heavy stress out of those stresses, and to solve this, they are more project-oriented, requiring students to turn in assignments and give presentations for their academic marks.

Where most other streams stick to in-class learning and classroom lectures, IBMYP also encourages students to do research for themselves, and places emphasis on laboratory experiments and procedures, especially for those taking IBMYP Sciences. This allows students more freedom to learn, and will give them a more hands-free learning experience instead of the usual style of simply reading over notes to learn concepts.

While this is may be seen as a pleasant difference from the typical ‘40:60 homework:examination’ ratio that most are used to, this may also be a weakness in the sense that since most students are used to only dealing with exam-related stress during a particular month, and adjusting to the new change in curriculum may be new for them. Another possible weakness is that without the specific feedback that examinations usually give, a student may be unsure of which topic they are weak at, and will not know whether they are studying in the ‘right’ way or not.

Despite this, Tuttee is a remedy to this problem. Our tutors are experienced in teaching students who are also new to the IBMYP curriculum. We emphasize on a steady pace of studying, and will make a personalized profile of our students’ learning pace, their learning style and the conditions they work with best, and will work with them to find an ideal schedule for them to learn. Project and research-based studies are also our forte, and we help students with pointers and personal discussions to develop their presentations into a more legible and distinctive form.
