This I/GCSE Chemistry blog post will look into the features and chemical elements of nitrogen, let's go!
NITROGEN
- Nitrogen comprises about 79% of air by volume.
- It is extracted from the air by fractional distillation of liquefied air.
- Nitrogen is a colourless gas.
- It has no taste or smell. It does not burn, nor does it support combustion or respiration.
- At the very high temperatures in power station furnaces, a small amount of atmospheric nitrogen reacts with oxygen.
- Nitrogen is diatomic.
Nitrogen has three important oxides:
- NO2 - nitrogen dioxide
- NO - nitrogen monoxide or nitric oxide
- N2O - nitrous oxide or dinitrogen monoxide.
- It is used in the food industry to fill crisp packets and to help the food remain in good condition.
NITROGEN DIOXIDE, NO2
- Is a red-brown gas which is very poisonous. Its molecules tend to join together in pairs at lower temperatures.
- The mixture becomes a yellow liquid at around 0°C, and a colourless solid at about 10°C.
- Nitrogen dioxide reacts with water to form two acids, nitrous and nitric acid.
- This accounts for its very sharp smell.
- It is an acidic oxide. When heated aboe 140°C it will decompose into nitric oxide and oxygen.
That is all!
