I/GCSE Chemistry Question Analysis Topic: Chemistry - Short Questions

Exam Questions:

1) What are the types of RNA molecule which perform different functions?

2) Give one example of a condensation polymer.

3) Write the name of linkage joining two amino acids.

Answers:

For I/GCSE Chemistry, you should know:

1) In protein synthesis, RNA has three roles.

Firstly, messenger RNA (mRNA) is translated into the proteins with the joint efforts of transfer RNA (tRNA) as well as the ribosome. Such are composed of several different proteins, in addition to two major ribosomal RNA (rRNA) molecules.

2) Condensation polymers are formed when two different bi-functional / tri-functional monomeric units undergo repeated condensation reactions with one another.

In these reactions, the elimination of small molecules such as water or alcohol take place.

Examples of such condensation polymers are dacron and nylon 6-6.

3) Such a linkage of consecutive amino acid monomers is called an amide bond / peptide bond.

Large proteins are formed when peptide bonds are linked with amino acids. The bond is formed via condensation reaction, where carbonyl and the amine group link together as water is released.
