IBDP Physics Question Analysis Topic: Physics - Long Question

Exam Question:

Draw a block diagram of a detector for AM signal and show, using necessary processes and the waveforms, how the original message signal is detected from the input AB wave.

Answer:

For IBDP Physics, you should know:

Demodulation, which extracts the original information-carrying signal from a modulated carrier wave, is used to detect the original message from an AB wave.

An electronic circuit known as a demodulator is used to extract the information content from a modulated carrier wave. Demodulators come in a wide variety since there are many types of modulation.

A demodulator's output signal could be binary data, sound, or both.

Although demodulators come in a variety of forms and are commonly used in connection with radio receivers, many other systems do as well.

For instance, a demodulator is used to separate a serial digital data stream from a carrier signal that is used to carry it through a telephone line, coaxial cable, or optical fibre in a modem, which is short for modulator/demodulator.
