1) Why does NO2 dimerise?

2) Why is adsorption always exothermic?

3) Explain the principle of the method of electrolytic refining of metals. Give one example.

Answers:

For IBDP Chemistry, you should know:

1) The presence of an unpaired electron on nitrogen causes NO2 to dimerize.

2) Since the forces of attraction between the molecular species and the surface drive the adsorption process, it is always exothermic. Adsorption causes the release of heat.

3) Aqueous salt solutions of impure metals are electrolyzed. While cathode is made of pure metal, anode is not. The anode's metal dissolves in solution and deposits the equivalent amount of pure metal on the cathode. Less reactive metal impurities are insoluble and create anode mud at the bottom while more reactive metal impurities dissolve in solution.
