IBDP Biology Question Analysis Topic: Biology - Short Questions

Exam Questions:

1) How is a continuous culture system maintained in bioreactors and why?

2) Write any two places where methanogens can be found.

3) What is hydrarch succession?

Answers:

For IBDP Biology, you should know:

1) Continuous culture system:
To keep the cells in their
physiologically most active log/exponential phase, the used medium is drained out from one side of the system while the fresh medium is added from the other. Larger biomass is produced by the continuous culture method, leading to a higher yield of the desired protein.

2) One can usually find methanogens in:
(i) The
guts of animals
(ii)
Hydrothermal vents
(iii) The deep layers in
marine sediments
(iv)
Wetlands

3) A hydrarch succession is succession that takes place in wetter areas, in which the successional series transitions from hydric conditions to mesic ones.
