I/GCSE Physics Question Analysis Topic: Physics - Electricity

Exam Question:
Resistivity of a given conductor depends upon..

A. temperature
B. length of conductor
C. area of cross section
D. shape of the conductor

Answer:

For I/GCSE Physics, you should know:

A material's resistivity is a characteristic that is dependent on its composition and nature. The temperature influences the composition. Resistivity is therefore temperature-dependent, hence the answer is A.

Formula: R = ρl / A

By the above formula, we can see that resistance is affected by length and area of cross section, but NOT resistivity.

Additional note:
Resistance is the obstacle to the flow of current by a conductor. Resistivity, on the other hand, is the obstacle of current flowing
per unit area of said conductor.
