IBDP Chemistry Question Analysis Topic: Chemistry - Adsorption

Exam Question:
A poisonous gas is adsorbed at activated charcoal. The activated charcoal is:
(A) Absorber
(B) Adsorbate
(C) Adsorbent
(D) Absorbate

Answer:

For IBDP Chemistry, you should know:

- It is stated that activated charcoal can adsorb a harmful gas. As a result, the gas gathers here on the activated charcoal. Consequently, we can state that the toxic gas is adsorbate. The activated charcoal serves as an adsorbent.

- Finely split solids have a higher surface area and can function well as adsorbers.

- For instance, silica gel, clay, charcoal, metals that are finely divided

- Desorption is the process of removing an adsorbate from the surface.

- The two primary categories of adsorption are physisorption and chemisorption.

- We can therefore draw the conclusion that the gas that is adsorbed on activated charcoal is referred to as adsorbate.
