  • In IGCSE English,  ZOOM OUT – DON’T LOOK AT WORD LANGUAGE AND STRUCTURE AS MUCH. DON’T LOOK FOR METAPHORS OR SIMILIES FOR EXAMPLE.
    • FOCUS ON ‘HOW WELL’ NOT JUST ‘HOW’.
    • USE EVALUATING LANGUAGE – OPINION,JUDGMENT
    • FOCUS UPON IDEAS,EVENTS,THEMES AND SETTINGS
  • HOW THE WRITERS USE OF TECHNIQUES HELP US UNDERSTAND THEIR INTENTIONS.
  • EVALUATE THE WRITERS INTENTION – ALWAYS IN THE QUESTION.
  • ‘HOW WELL’ HAS THE WRITER ACHIEVED THEIR INTENTION.

Preparing your writing – 5 min.

A clear opening.

Start, middle, end

1)Read the question, choose the one you feel most confident with.

2)FLAP it.

3)Use the wording of the question and the bullet points to jot down. Plan for the structure of your writing and for techniques.

Be clear about punctuation.

Use full stops

Commas

Dashes

Colons

Semi-colons

FORM – to do with the text type: are you being ask to write. a letter to a local newspaper?

LANGUAGE – to do with the kind of language you should use. Formal or informal, vocabulary  use.

AUDIENCE – to do with the group of people you are being asked to write for, target audience.

PURPOSE – to do with the overall purpose of the text: is it to writer to inform? Argue? Persuade? Instruct? entertain? describe? explain? review?
