Exam Questions:

1) How is leaching carried out in the case of low grade copper ores? Name the method used for refining of copper metal.

2) Write the role of CO in the extraction of iron.

Answer:

For I/GCSE Chemistry, you should know:

1) Low grade copper is leached with dilute H2S04 solution, i.e. sulfuric acid.
CuO(s) + H2SO4(aq) --> CuSO4(aq) + H2O(l)

CuSO4(aq) + Fe(s) --> FeSO4(aq) + 2Cu(s)

The method used for refining copper metal is the refining method of electrolysis.
Here, a copper strip and a block of unrefined metal are utilised as a cathode and anode respectively, while CuSO4 serves as an electrolyte.

2) CO serves as a reducing agent.
