Exam Question:
Find the area of the shaded region if ABCD is a rectangle with sides 8cm and 6cm and O is the center of circle.(Take π =3.14)

Answer:

For GCSE Mathematics, you should know:

Information given:
DA = CB = 6 cm
DC = AB = 8 cm

In the diagram:

The diameter of the circle = The diagonal of the rectangle
Hence, the radius is 12√(62+82) = 5 cm

The area of the circle: πr2= π(5)2 = 25π =78.5 cm2
The area of the rectangle is 6 × 8 = 48 cm2
As such, the area of the shaded region can be calculated by the area of the circle − the area of the rectangle is 78.5 − 48 = 30.5 cm2
