GCSE Chemistry Question Analysis Topic: Chemistry - Electrolysis
Exam Question:
Write the principle of electrolytic refining.
Answer:
For GCSE Chemistry, you should know:
The technique of purifying impure metals with electricity is called electrolytic refining. In this procedure, a strip of pure metal serves as the cathode and an impure metal strip serves as the anode. The electrolyte is a solution of a soluble salt of the same metal. When an electric current is passed, the electrolyte's metal ions deposit as pure metal at the cathode while the anode's impure metal dissolves as ions into the electrolyte. Under the anode, the impurities in the impure metal are gathered. It is referred to as anode mud.
