A-Level Chemistry Question Analyses Topic: Chemistry - Short Questions

Exam Question:
1)
Give reasons for the following:
Dioxygen is a gas but sulphur a solid.

2) Why is aspirin used in the prevention of heart-attacks?

Answer:

For A-Level Chemistry, you should know:

1) Due to its smaller size compared to sulfur, oxygen is better able to form pπ-pπ bonds and produce O2 molecules.

Moreover, oxygen is a gas because of the weak Van der Waal's forces that act between molecules. Sulfur, on the other hand, doesn't create S2 molecules; instead, it is a puckered structure bound together by powerful covalent bonds. Hence, it is strong.

2) Aspirin is commonly known as an anti-clotting agent.

By preventing blood from clotting, aspirin helps to avoid heart attacks and strokes, i.e. aspirin thins the blood to prevent it from clotting, which helps to prevent heart attacks.
