A Level Chemistry F324 Unit 4: Condensation Polymerisation I

Polyesters

· A Level,Chemistry,A level chemistry,condensation polymer,polyesters

In A level chemistry curriculum, condensation polymerisation is the joining of two monomers with the elimination of a small molecule such as water or HCl

Polyesters

In A level chemistry, monomers must have a carboxyl group COOH, and a hydroxl group OH and can be made from 2 types of monomer units:

  • one dicarboxylic acid (2 COOH groups) and one diol (2 OH groups)
    • Bond forms between hydroxyl and carboxyl
    • Ester linkage forms and eliminates water

  • One type of monomer containing both a COOH and OH group
    • Bond forms between hydroxyl of one and carboxyl of another
    • ester linkage forms and water is eliminated

  • In A level chemistry, condensation polymer refers to:
    • COOH and -OH or -NH2 functional group
    • 1 or 2 types of monomer
    • Polyester or poly amide + water
  • Addition polymer:
    • C=C functional group
    • 1 type of monomer
    • Poly(alkane) produced
