UCAT/ UKCAT Question Analysis - Q36

Albert, Cassandra, Denise and Barbara went shooping. They bought four types of items: trousers, shirt, hat and shoes. The labels showed the prices (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER): £35, £60, £50, £45.

  • Barbara didn't buy the shoes
  • Denise bought black trousers
  • Denise spent £10 more than Barbara
  • The blue short was bought by a woman for £45.

Which of the following must be correct?

A. The shoes cost £35.

B. Barbara bought the shirt.

C. Albert bought the hat.

D. Cassandra bought the shoes.

Answer: A

Explanation: Among the four, there are only one man and three women. As Denise bought black trousers, the blue shirt, which was bought by a woman, was bought either by Barbara or Cassandra.

It is known that Denise spent £10 more than Barbara. By looking at the prices given, Barbara either spent £35 or £50. As the blue shirt was bought for £45, it means the blue shiet was not purchased by Barbara and must have been bought by Cassandra.

Now, it is known that Barbara did not buy the shirt or the trousers. Since we are told she did not buy the shoes, it means she bought the hat.

Denise spent £10 more than Barbara and so must have spent either £45 or £60. Since £45 was the paid by Cassandra for buying the shirt, we can deduce that Denise spent £60. So Barbara is the one who spent £50.

Hence, albert spent £35.

The following table shows the conclusion.
