Some astronauts and their controllers on Earth develop a code to communicate with each other. Interpret the following messages as best you can.

broken image

What is the best interpretation of the following code?

(1, 5, 6), B, 14

The people in space are running out of water

The astronauts landed in the ocean

It rained on the astronauts

There is not much water in space

The aliens have run out of water

 Answer and Explanation

(1, 5, 6), B, 14 translates as (People, Moon, Stars), Down, Water

The correct answer is 'The astronauts landed in the ocean'

(People, Moon, Stars) are all linked to form 'astronauts'. 'Down' and 'water' are then used to give 'landed in the ocean'. The code is used in the correct order and an appropriate interpretation of all the code has been made.

'The people in space are running out of water' is close but does not link 'people, moon, stars,' in to one meaning. This option would have been a strong contender had the brackets not been present

'It rained on the astronauts' is a possibility but changes the order of the code and so is not as good as the correct answer

'There is not much water in space' does not use 'people'

The aliens have run out of water' switches 'people' to 'aliens'
