IBDP Biology Question Analysis Topic: Biology - Genomes

Exam Question:
State any three goals of the human genome project.

Answer:

For IBDP Biology, you should know:

Note: The goal of the publically financed human genome project was to map the nucleotides in a reference human haploid genome.

Three goals
1. To provide a thorough and accurate breakdown of the 20,000 or so human genes and the DNA base pairs that make up the human genome.

2. To sequence the genomes of numerous other creatures, including the mouse, Drosophila, and other vital ones for medical research.

3. To finish a sequence-tagged site (STS) map of the human genome and create markers that are simpler to utilize.

Additional answers you may write:
- To create new tools and technologies that will make it easier to collect, analyze, and research data and to make it broadly available.

- To create effective techniques for locating known genes on physical maps or DNA sequences and for identifying unknown genes.

- Because genetic research breakthroughs have costs for both individuals and society, the program's Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) initiative examines the effects of genetic research.

- To encourage scientists to pursue interdisciplinary training in fields relating to genetic research.
