I/GCSE Chemistry Question Analysis Topic: Chemistry - Atoms, Elements and Compounds
Define the following with a suitable example, of each:
(a) Coagulation
(b) Multimolecular colloid
(c) Gel
Answer:
Coagulation
Term used to describe the process of colloidal particles settling. In the I/GCSE Chemistry curriculum, it is also referred to as the precipitation of sol.
For example: Adding more electrolytes to cause the lyophobic colloid to coagulate.
Colloid with several molecules
As part of I/GCSE Chemistry, it's taught that when a substance dissolves, a lot of its atoms or smaller molecules aggregate to create species with sizes in the colloidal range. Multimolecular colloids are the species that result from this process.
For example: Sulfur sol, gold sol, etc.
Gel
It is defined as a liquid dispersed in solid.
For example: Cheese, butter, etc.
That's all for now. I can feel your knowledge level rising from all the way here!
