BMAT Prep Question Analysis - Q85 & Q117

Q85 Which of the following statements regarding a magnetic rod is true?

I. The rod must have a north and a south pole

II. There is no current within the rod

III.Magnetic rods are monopolar

a. I only

b. I and Il only

c. Il and Ill only

d. lIl only

e. None of the above

Q117 A 2,000 kg car travelling at 30 m/s crashes into a 5,000 kg truck that is originally at rest. What is the speed of the truck after the collision, if the car comes to rest at the point of impact? (Ignore friction)

a. 2 m/s

b. 4 m/s

c. 8 m/s

d. 10 m/s

e. 12 m/s

Answer and Explanation

Q85 Answer: a. I only

Explanation: All magnets are dipolar, meaning that they all have a north and a south pole. For a magnetic field to be produced, there must be a flow of charge, or current. Ferromagnetism means that the materials can retain magnetisa-tion and become magnets. Magnetic rods can also be made of other paramagnetic and diamagnetic material.

Q117 answer: e. 12 m/s

Explanation: The sum of the momentums before the collision is equal to the sum of the momentum after the collision (since friction is ignored) and we need to use the conservation of momentum equation to determine the speed of the truck after the impact: m = mass and u = velocity.
