1) Why is banana considered a good example of parthenocarpy?

(b) An improved breed of chicken

3) Name the bacterium that causes typhoid. Mention two diagnostic symptoms. How is this disease transmitted to others?

Answers:

For A-Level Biology, you should know:

1) Banana plant produce fruits even without the ovules being fertilized, since the male flowers are sterile and pollination being impossible. The female flowers, on the other hand, grow into green fruits - bananas! These fruits are formed because of the induction of growth hormones. Since seeds aren't formed, it's described as parthenocarpic. The group of flowers is enveloped in a waxy bract.

3) The disease typhoid is caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria.

Symptoms include poor appetite, headache, fever as well as aches and pains.

Salmonella typhi is contracted by consuming the bacteria in contaminated food or water.
