Exam Question:
Explain the various steps involved in the production of artificial insulin.

Answer:

For A-Level Biology, you should know:

Human insulin was the first product created by genetic engineering. The technology of recombinant DNA can be used to create it. A human cell is used to isolate the gene that makes the protein known as human insulin. A bacterial cell is used to isolate a plasmid. 

To cleave the plasmid, specialized restriction enzymes are employed. The plasmid has the insulin gene put into it. Recombination is the name given to this process. The human insulin gene has been introduced into the bacterial DNA and is now present in the bacteria. Recombinant insulin is made by translating the insulin gene.
