I/GCSE Biology - Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Edexcel Biology Vertebrates and Invertebrates

July 15, 2021
  • In a phylum 'Chordata' the animals have a supporting rod running across their back, many animals in the chordata are vertebrates

Vertebrate groups split in to five groups...🦍

  • Oxygen absorption- some use gills others use their lungs
  • Fertilisation- inside the body (internal fertilisation), outside the body (external fertilisation)
  • Reproduction- young born alive (viviparous), lay eggs (oviparous)
  • Thermoregulation- controlling their body temperature (homeotherm), body temperature varies with environment (poikilotherm)

Vertebrates- have a backbone that acts as a supporting rod (humans)

Invertebrates- don't have a backbone (starfish)

You may also have to know these words for I/GCSE Biology

  • Internal- fertilisation inside of the body (humans)
  • External- fertilisation outside of the body (frogs)
  • Viviparous- give brith to live young (humans)
  • Oviparous- lay eggs (birds)
  • Homeotherm- control their own body temperature (humans)
  • Poikilotherm- body temperature varies according to the environment
