CHEM- Structure of Ionic Compounds

Chemistry, Structure of Ionic Compounds- IBDP | DSE | GCE | IAL | AP Chemistry

May 3, 2018

Ionic compounds consist of oppositely charged ions packed closely together in a regular pattern.

🤓 Consider this example:

1.37 Draw a diagram to represent the positions of the ions in a crystal of sodium chloride.

Sodium Chloride

Sodium chloride is made up of sodium ions and chloride ions packed in a regular pattern called a lattice.

🧐Each sodium ion is surrounded by 6 chloride ions and each chloride ions is surrounded by 6 sodium ions

Take a look at the other examples of ionic compounds👇

Calcium Fluoride

The lattice of Calcium Fluoride consists of calcium ions and fluoride ions.

🧐Each fluoride ion is surrounded by 4 calcium ions whereas each calcium ions is surrounded by 8 fluoride ions

Caesium Chloride

The lattice of Caesium Chloride comprises a cubic lattice of caesium ions interpenetrated by another cubic lattice of chloride ions.

🧐The 8 chloride ions lie at the corners of a cube (blue) which is placed in the middle of the caesium structure
