A-Level Physics Question Analysis Topic: Physics - Short Questions

Exam Questions:

1) Differentiate between half life and average life of a radioactive substance.

2) Explain briefly the following terms used in communication system:
(i) Transducer
(ii) Repeater
(iii) Amplification

Answers:

For A-Level Physics, you should know:

1) Half Life
Definition: It is the time required for
half of a particular radioactive substance to decay.

It is denoted by t1/2.

It is also equal to ln 2 / λ, where λ is the decay constant.

On the other hand,

Average Life
Definition: It is the
expected life for a radioactive substance which is in a particular sample.

It is denoted by τ.

It is also equal to 1 / λ.

2) Transducer: Converts one form of energy into another form. For example, the transducer in a microphone converts sound energy into electrical energy.

Repeater: Put simply, it receives signals and retransmits it. Useful for extending transmissions (over longer distances or to get past obstructions)

Amplification: As a signal travels further, its strength decreases. Amplication makes sure to prevent this issue by increasing the signal's strength.

Work hard for your A-Level Physics examination!

End of analysis. Great!
