IBDP Mathematics Question Analysis Topic: Mathematics - Probability

Exam Question:

All the red face cards are removed from a pack of 52 playing cards. A card is drawn at random from the remaining cards, after reshuffling them. Find the probability that the drawn card is

a) of red color

b) a queen

c) an ace

d) a face card.

Answer:

For IBDP Mathematics, you should know:

Before we start, make sure to note that the number of cards in a deck is 52.

(a) Since all the red face cards were removed, we are left with 46 cards, and subsequently 26 - 6 = 20 red colour cards remain.
Hence, the probability of getting a
red card would be 20 / 46 i.e., 10 / 23.

(b) Number of queens in the pack = 2 i.e.,
P(E) = 2 / 46 = 1 / 23

(c) Number of aces in the pack = 4 i.e.,
P(E) = 4 / 46 = 2 / 23

(d) Number of face cards = 6 i.e.,
P(E) = 6 / 46 = 3 / 23

Work hard for your IBDP Mathematics examination!

End of analysis. Great!
