DANGERS☠️
You will have to know the dangers of each one in I/GCSE Physics
- X-rays and gamma rays can cause mutations to the DNA in cells in the body. This may kill cells or cause Cancer.
- UV in sunlight can damage skin cells causing Sunburn. Over time exposure to UV can cause skin cancer. UV can also damage the eyes.
- Infrared radiation transfers heat energy. Too much infrared radiation can cause skin burns.
- Microwaves heat water-so they can heat water inside our bodies. Heating cells can damage or kill them.
USES🤣
Gamma rays
- To sterilise food and medical equipment.
- In scanners to detect cancer.
- To treat cancer
X-rays
- To look inside objects including human bodies
- In airport security scanners to see what people have in their luggage.
Ultraviolet
- To detect security marks made using special pens inside fluorescent lamps.
- To detect forged bank notes (real banknotes have markings that glow in UV light).
- To disinfect water.
Visible light
- Allows us to se, lights up rooms, buildings and roads.
- Photography.
Infrared
- In cooking.
- To make thermal images (images using heat) used by police and rescue services.
- In short range communications such as between laptops or other small computers.
- In remote controls for TV's and other appliances where the signal only has to travel short distances.
- To send information along optical fibres.
- In security alarms e.g. Burglar alarms to detect people moving around.
Microwaves
- In mobile phones and to communicate with satellites.
- For cooking (in microwave ovens).
Radiowaves
- Broadcasting radio and TV programmes.
- Communicating with Ships, aeroplanes and satellites.
