I/GCSE Chemistry: Shapes of Molecules (Part 2)

Shapes of Molecules

January 10, 2022

Shapes of Molecules

Example 4- Phosphorus Chloride (PCl₅)

Around the central P atom: 5 bonding pairs, 0 lone pairs

Takes 2 bonding angles: 90° between atoms around equator & atoms of axis; 120° between atoms at equator (360÷3) such that the shape of molecule formed is TRIGONAL BIPYRAMID.

Example 5- Sulphur Fluoride (SF₆)

Around the central S atom: 6 bonding pairs, 0 lone pair

Bond angle is 90° (360÷4) such that the shape of molecule formed is OCTAHEDRAL

You finish both part 1 & 2!

Excellent Work~
