The reactivity of Group 7 elements decreases as we move down the group.

❗️​​❕​Further Explanation:

When moving down the group, the atoms get larger thus the outermost shell gets further from the nucleus. 

As a result, ​the attraction between the nucleus and electrons gets weaker, so an electron is less easily gained.

Displacement Reaction of Chlorine and Potassium Bromide

2KBr(aq) + Cl2(g) → 2KCl(aq) + Br2(aq)

  • More reactive chlorine displaces the less reactive bromine
  • It is a redox reaction as bromide is being oxidized and chlorine is being reduced

Experiment 2

Displacement Reaction of Chlorine and Potassium Iodide

2KI(aq) + Cl2(g) → 2KCl(aq) + I2(aq)

  • More reactive chlorine displaces the less reactive iodine
  • It is a redox reaction as iodine is being oxidized and chlorine is being reduced

Displacement Reaction of bromine and sodium bromide

2NaBr (aq)+ Cl2(g) → 2NaCl(aq) + Br2(aq)
