AS/A-Level Mathematics: Indices, Surds & Factorizing

Indices, Surds & Factorizing

November 29, 2021

In AS/A-Level Mathematics, Indices, Surds & Factorizing are the fundamental topics that students must understand. Let's check them below!

Indices

There are the rules of indices.

Surds

  • Numbers like are √2, 3, 11 called surds.
  • A surd is an irrational number which means that it cannot be written exactly as a decimal number or in the form where a and b are integers.
  • The following rules apply: √ab = a x √b
  • √(a/b) = √(a)/(b)

Factorizing

  • The process of writing an expression as a product of its factors is called factorization.

Examples:

a2 - b2 = (a+b) (a-b)

(x2+4x+3) = (x+1) (x+3)

  • When factorizing a quadratic expression, such as ax2 + bx + c, we are looking to write it in the form (mx+n)(px+q). We need to consider two cases, when a = 1 and when a =/=1

It's done~ Great Job!
