I/GCSE Biology -  Enzymes

Enzymes

July 8, 2021

In I/GCSE Biology, it is important to remember the topic regarding enzyme. Let's get started!!!! 😁

Features of enzymes

It's important to remember the following points below in I/GCSE Biology,

  • Enzymes are biological catalysts.
  • They are found in living organisms
  • They act as catalysts that changes the rate of a reaction but remains unchanged at the end of the reaction.
  • Each enzyme is specific for its substrate, which means that it only works with that substrate.

Active sites

Once we talk about enzyme in I/GCSE Biology,  you have to study the active sites of enzyme as well!

  • Enzymes have different active sites
  • They connect with substrates
  • Fit like a ‘lock and key’
  • These make an enzyme-substrate complex
  • Only specific enzymes breakdown specific substrates
👇🏻 Look at the diagram below! 👇🏻

Denatured enzymes

At the end, we are going to talk about the denaturation of enzymes in I/GCSE Biology!

  • Changing the temperature or pH of the enzyme meaning the active sight won’t fit the substrate
  • This would slow down the reaction
Look at the graphs below to have a clear concept!

And we're done with this topic! Well Done!
