HKDSE Biology - Catabolism VS Anabolism

Compulsory Part I Cells and Molecules of Life

April 29, 2020

Distinguish between catabolic and anabolic processes.

In HKDSE Biology examination, you have to clearly define metabolism, catabolism and anabolism 🤔 Don't mix them up ❗️ ❕

Metabolism

  • Catabolism ➕ Anabolsim ➡️ Metabolism
  • Metabolism is all the chemical reaction take place in cell.

Catabolism

👆🏻This photo showing catabolism is the break down process.

  • Catabolism is an enzyme catalysed reaction in which large molecules are being broken down or degraded.
  • Energy will be released in catabolism and conserved as ATP.

📒 Catabolism example

  • In respiration, glucose and oxygen react to form carbon dioxide and water.
  • In cell, hydroxide peroxide will decompose into water and oxygen.

Anabolism

👆🏻This photo showing anabolsim is the build up process.

  • Anabolism is an enzyme catalysed reaction in which simple molecules are synthesised into complex molecules.
  • Energy is required in anabolism which is ATP released in catabolism.

📒 Anabolism example

  • Monosaccharides combine to form disaccharides.
  • Amino acids combine to form dipeptides.
  • Glycerol and fatty acid combine to form lipid.
  • In photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water react to form glucose and oxygen.

In HKDSE Biology examination, you have to classify the chemical reaction whether is catabolism (break down) or anabolism (build up) ❗️ ❕

That's the end of this topic 👏🏻
