BIOL - Why Doesn't Unicellular Organisms Need Transport System?

You may or may not have wondered the importance of diffusion movement of substances in and out of the cell and why simple unicellular organisms rely on it.

The unicellular organisms are single-celled organism:

-Relies on diffusion ( ‘spreading out’ ) to move substances into and out of cells.

-Has a large surface area compared to its volume resulting in nutrients and other substances to pass through the membrane and its ‘body’ quickly!

In contrast…

The multicellular organism such as plant or animal :

-small in size compared to its volume

-need specialized exchange surfaces (eg. Lungs and gills ) and transport systems.

[ BASICALLY , SINCE THE SIZE OF MULTICELLULAR PLANTS AND ANIMALS HAS TOO SMALL OF A SURFACE AREA TO VOLUME RATIO, HENCE REQUIRE OTHER METHODS INSTEAD OF DIFFUSION WHICH WILL BE TOO SLOW TO PROVIDE NECESSARY MOLECULES ]

*The larger the organism, the smaller the surface area to volume.*
