Question: 2.14 Understand the importance in plants of turgid cells as means of support

Importance of Turgid cell

A turgid cell - effectively, full of water;

this increases the volume of the cytoplasm, which exerts pressure outwards. These cells are stronger so they support the plant: plant grows upwards.

This is crucial as it provides strength to plants. Plant cells have a cell wall to stop them from bursting when turgid (swollen). When plant cells start to lose water they become flaccid. Flaccid plants lose their strength and start to wilt.

*Eventually, flaccid cells become plasmolysed as the cell membrane begins to peel away from the cell wall. This kills the cell.*

Example:

Plants on land can be divided into
a) woody plants
b) herbaceous plants (non-woody plants)

Woody plants with a single thick stem are called trees. Examples of trees are mango trees and Angsana trees.

Woody plants with many branches close to the ground are called shrubs. Examples of shrubs are hibiscus shrubs and rose shrubs.

*Cells of non-woody plants absorb and retain water in their cells making them firm and turgid.*

Herbaceous:

-Supported by the turgidity of cells.

-Cannot support a heavy weight.

-Supported by woody tissues.

-Can support a heavy weight.
