Photosynthesis:

It enables through leaves. Photosynthesis is the process by which leaves absorb light and carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrate (food) for plants to grow. Leaves further adapted to carry out their function.

Function of leaf: Carry out photosynthesis.

Features:

Adaptation

Purpose

Chlorophyll

Absorb sunlight to transfer energy into chemicals

Stomata

Allow CO2 to diffuse into the leaf

Network of veins

To support the leaf and transport water and carbohydrates

Thin

Shortened distance for CO2 to diffuse into leaf cells

Large surface area

To absorb more light

Inside the Leaf:

*the internal structure sustains efficient photosynthesis*

Structure:

Adaptation

Purpose

Thin cuticle made of wax

To protect the leaf without blocking out the light

Spongy layer

Air spaces allow CO2 to diffuse through the leaf, increasing the surface area

Thin and transparent Epidermis

To allow more light to reach the palisade cells

Palisade cell layer at top of the leaf

Absorb more light

Palisade cells containing many chloroplasts

To absorb all available light possible
