Osmosis

Osmometer

It is a device used for measuring the osmotic strength of a solution, colloid or a compound. Often used by chemists for the determination of AVERAGE MOLECULAR WEIGHT.

How it works?

  1. The sample is super cooled within a cooling fluid or using SOLID STATE COOLING.
  2. Next, a rapid stir mechanism is used to initiate crystallization.
  3. The temperature rises due to latent heat of crystallization.
  4. A thermistor (temperature-dependent resistor) reading is recorded thermistor
  5. Further comparison with standards allows calculation of the osmolality.

Other several techniques launched in Osmometry:

  • Vapor pressure depression osmometers: determines the concentration of osmotically active particles that reduce the vapor pressure of a solution.
  • Membrane Osmometres: measures the osmotic pressure of a solution separated from pure solvent of a semi-permeable membrane.
  • Freezing point depression osmometer: may also be used to determine the osmotic strength of a solution. This is because osmotically active compounds depress the freezing point of a solution.

AANDD...

This is a similar situation to a healthy plant cell where the static pressure exerted by the cell wall against the protoplast stops the flow of water into the protoplast immersed in a hypotonic medium.
