Question: 2.67 Understand the origin of CO2 and O2 as waste products of metabolism and their loss from the stomata of a leaf.

Excretion in plants

Plants need to excrete excess carbon dioxide and oxygen. Carbon dioxide is a waste product of aerobic respiration in plant cells. oxygen is a waste product of photosynthesis.

The leaf:

Unlike animals, plants do not have special excretory organs. Excess carbon dioxide and oxygen are excreted from the plant through the stomata in the leaves.

METABOLISM:

All Chemical Reactions that Take Place inside Living Cells

Metabolic Reactions that take Place in Plants are:

AEROBIC RESPIRATION: The Breakdown of Glucose to release Energy in Cells in the Presence of Oxygen to Produce Carbon Dioxide and Water (and Energy)

EQUATION:

Glucose       +       Oxygen       →       Carbon dioxide       +       Water

C6H12O6                      6O2                               6CO2                          H2O

*As a Waste Product, Plants will Produce Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen which will be removed through the Stomata (When it is Open) by Diffusion*
